Evolution: Dancehall Culture within Toronto
During BAND’s TD Then and Now Black History Month Series, a certain exhibit was characterized by its lively discussions, its standing room crowds, and its Caribbean culture that is quintessentially Toronto. This exhibit is, of course, Lesia Bailey’s Evolution.
Through her photography, Lesia has been capturing the essence of the diverse Toronto and International Dancehall scenes with all their drama, beauty, and vibrant lifestyle. Under the moniker "Pictalady Lesia," she has captured the change and evolution in Dancehall culture - a lifestyle in which everyone is a curator - since 1990. This lifestyle allows anyone to create and recreate her/himself into anything of their choosing. The Dancehall is her canvass; everyone therein becomes her subject, and Lesia’s photography strikes the balance of capturing the brash spirit of Dancehall culture while documenting a true story through her unparalleled photography.

Exhibit runs until Sunday May 26th 2013
BAND gallery hours: Monday - Friday by appointment only
Saturday 12-5pm
Sunday 1-5pm
